Harold Shapero was born on April 29, 1920, in Lynn, Massachusetts. Raised there and in Newton, another Boston-area suburb, he was already playing the piano at age seven. By the time he reached college, he had achieved a good bit more musically than most teenagers. This included theory and composition lessons with Nicolas Slonimsky and Ernst K enek,
